How is Residential Roof Installed in Toronto?

As the summer approaches, many Torontonian homeowners decide to do some contract work on their roofing. Whether it be a small repair job, or a full replacement of the roof structure, it is best to do some research before approaching companies. The installation process should ensure that your new roof will last for years to come, without developing any premature problems. A basic procedure is as follows:

#1 Preparation of the  surrounding area for installation process

This is done to protect the other parts of your home, as well as reduce the clean up. Depending on your situation, this may include covering windows, shrubs and bushes, or decks with a tarp and plywood temporarily.

#2 Removing old shingles and roofing material

Getting a look at what is under your current roofing materials allows the contractor to assess the wood decking below for integrity and strength.

#3 Inspecting the wood decking

This is the foundation of your roof, and any weakness here will give problems to the above layers. Soft, wet or rotting wood will have to be replaced to give a strong base. Along with a solid wooden sheet, roofers should ensure that the base is attached firmly to the rafters underneath; they may have to renail certain areas to the wooden rafters below

#4 Preparing the roofing surface for the shingles

  • Drip edge: piece of metal bent at a 90° angle, that is installed at the edges of the roof to prevent rainwater from getting underneath the roofing
  • Ice and water shield:  a special underlayment that prevents water from leaking to the wood decking below. Here in Toronto and surrounding areas, this also prevents snow and ice from destroying the wood. It needs to be installed under the roof, as well as along any structures that penetrate the roof, like a chimney or pipe flanges.
  • Roofing felt: this prevents the shingles from sticking to the wood, and is applied on top of the ice and water shield.

#5 New roofing material: from bottom up

The shingles and other roofing materials are laid out methodically, taking care to go around ridges and vents. Generally done from the bottom/edge of the roof to the very top of the house.

#6 Clean up

Great Work Roofers pay extra attention to clean ups after the complete installation. By company’s protocol, we are obligated to restore and clear your housing area of how we see it in the first place so your neighbours won’t be complaining about your waste!

#7 Final inspection

We make sure that the installation was done successfully, and that you as the customer are satisfied with the product. Do not worry! Any remaining balance is paid after the approval of the homeowner.

Overall this procedure is straightforward. Installation should be done carefully so that any underlying problems can be addressed, and any future issues that may rise up can be prevented. Having a company who knows what they are doing, as well as a reputation and experience to back it up, ensures that your roof is of exceptional quality, and will last for years to come.
